OpenAI and Google goes head to head.

In partnership with

TLDR; Google and OpenAI both announced groundbreaking AI advancements and applications this week. Ranging from new Google Workspace integrations to natural voice conversations – this marks a major step in the arms race of AI.

👉 What the fact?!

In a live stream on Monday, 13th of May, OpenAI announced GPT-4o and solidifying its role as the leading LLM company. And just a few days later Google had its yearly IO conference announcing a range of major upgrades to their AI and LLM initiatives.

Here’s a quick highlight of both announcements:

  • Google I/O

    • VEO: Similar to Sora, this is a generative video tool capable of creating 1080 video from simple text prompts.

    • Project Astra: A new AI agent capable of understanding and responding to live video and audio, and was showcased on a Pixel phone.

    • Deep product integrations: Google Photos, Workspace, and Search now have LLM capabilities integrated natively. Allowing for summarizing emails, search queries, and better photo searches.

  • OpenAI’s GPT-4o

    • Multimodal capabilities & enhanced vision: GPT-4o can now combine voice, text, and vision simultaneously. Its improved vision allows it to better understand visual input.

    • Real-time interaction: Speak with it like a human and get instant real-time answers. Combined with multimodal capabilities, you can essentially have a Facetime call like you would with any other human.

    • Free access: The new features in GPT-4o is already available for free to all users, with a limited number of prompts for non-paid accounts.

🔥 Potential impact

While it may seem like new AI advancements are announced weekly, the reality is that most don’t directly impact or affect the average user.

This is not one of those moments.

From real-time conversations with an LLM to faster workflows in your day to day workspace software, these updates are likely to at the very least slightly change the way you work.

Apart from just faster workflows, the ability to converse with an AI like another human is something we’ve been missing up until now. And while we don’t see AI replacing “the human touch” any time soon, these updates marks a major step forward.

Imagine having a video call with your therapist, or customer support, with the only difference being that the “person” on the other side is in fact not a person at all but an AI.

The point here is that AI is again likely to impact daily life, possibly for the first time since ChatGPT was initially launched to the public.

Again, few AI updates actually matters or affects for the average person – but that is not the case this time around.
